What Type of Camera Should I Use?

A digital or 35mm camera will provide the best photographs to be digitally modified.
Digital Camera
  • Your images need to be uploaded to us in either a "jpg" of "gif" format. If the camera you are using does not save images in either of those formats, it will be necessary to use available software to convert your images to one of these formats.

  •
  • You will need to transfer your images from the camera to an area on your computer than can be accessed while you are online. Most often, if your camera does not use a floppy disk to store your image, there will be some type of memory device that allows you to transfer the images from your camera to your computer. Likewise, there is usually software associated with the digital camera that will allow you to save the image in the proper format.

  •
  • Follow the instructions available with your software when saving your images.

  •
  • If possible, we would prefer you use a graphics program to resize your images so they are no larger than 300x600 pixels (approximately 4x6 inches).

  •
  • A telephoto lens may also be helpful.

  •
  • If your camera indicates you need more light to take the picture, be sure to follow the instructions with your camera for engaging the flash.

  •
  • If your camera has the capability, you may want to review the images you have taken to be certain you have an image you would like to use.
35mm
  • 400 ASA color film will give you the best results.

  •
  • A telephoto lens might be beneficial.

  •
  • If your camera does not have automatic focus and other automatic features, be sure to follow the instructions that came with your camera to get the best results from your pictures. This may include setting the flash unit, film speed, shutter speed, focusing the camera so the image is properly framed, and advancing the film.

  •
  • For best results, when processed your pictures should be no larger than approximately 4x6 inches.

  •
Preparing to Take the Picture
There are some things you can do in preparing to have your picture taken. For example:
  • Use a solid color background, preferably white. A light-colored wall with no decorations works well, or you may want to hang up a sheet and use it as a backdrop.

  •
  • Wear solid color clothing and remove all jewelry. In some instances you will need to remove your clothing and undergarments.
Taking the Picture
  • The part of your body or face you would like to see changed should be the focus in the center of the photograph.

  •
  • Use a flash as lighting dictates. Follow the instructions with your camera for engaging the flash.

  •
  • Make sure the part of your face or body you want to see changed is not shadowed. You may need to bring in a lamp or an additional light source to balance the light in the area. Also make sure there is not a strong light source behind the background or backdrop against which you are having your picture taken. Your face and body should be well lit, but not so bright that your image begins to washout in the photograph.

  •
  • Always take more than one shot in each position so you can select the best image. We will need three images to work from -- most often, a front, and two side views.
